Tasca d’Almerita Winery – Sallier de La Tour Estate, Camporeale (Palermo)

In the scenic Valle dello Jato, in the heart of the Monreale Doc, the estate spans 80 hectares, with 58 dedicated to vineyards and Syrah as its star variety.

Must Try

In 2008, Filiberto Sallier de La Tour, Prince of Camporeale, entrusted the management of his estate to his cousins, the renowned Tasca d’Almerita family. A passionate country man and a romantic at heart, Filiberto recognized in the Tasca family the legacy of a winemaking tradition capable of bringing out the best of this extraordinary territory.
Located in the Alto Belice region within the Monreale Doc, the Sallier de La Tour Estate is just a short drive from Palermo. The estate sits in a distinctive landscape rich in culture, with the magnificent Monreale Cathedral – an iconic medieval masterpiece and Unesco World Heritage Site – nearby, along with the captivating Monte Jato Archaeological Park, which preserves significant remnants of ancient Magna Graecia settlements.

The Evolution of Sallier de La Tour Estate
The Sallier de La Tour Estate has been owned by the family since the mid-19th century. In the 1940s, new vineyards were planted, and three hilltop lakes were created within the property, marking an important phase of development. However, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that the wines began to be bottled under the Sallier de La Tour label.
In 2008, the estate became part of the Tasca d’Almerita world, through a project aimed at integrating and enhancing the most renowned wine-growing territories of Sicily. Today, together with the Regaleali, Capofaro, Tascante and Whitaker estates, Tenuta Sallier de La Tour plays a key role in strengthening the wine ecosystem of one of Sicily’s most prestigious wine families.

«Since taking over the management of the estate in 2008, the Tasca family has embraced the iconic grape variety of this region: Syrah»

78 Hectares of Natural Beauty, 57 Devoted to Vineyards
Nestled at an altitude of 270 to 370 meters above sea level, the Sallier de La Tour Estate spans 78.4 hectares of picturesque countryside, where vineyards, olive groves and natural areas come together in perfect harmony.
With 57.7 hectares dedicated to vineyards, the estate is a true paradise for viticulture. A variety of indigenous grapes are cultivated here, including Nero d’Avola, Inzolia and Grillo, alongside the international Syrah, which has beautifully integrated into the unique climate of Sallier de La Tour, bringing out distinct Mediterranean notes. The vines produce Doc wines, including a red Doc Monreale.
Beyond the vineyards, the estate features 5.05 hectares of arable land, 3.3 hectares of pastures and 2.26 hectares of olive groves, where high-quality evo oil is produced. The 9.24 hectares of natural areas serve as a sanctuary for local flora and fauna, underscoring the estate’s commitment to environmental conservation. Additionally, 13 beehives stand as symbols of biodiversity and sustainable management.

«According to the historian Diodorus Siculus, Syrah was introduced to Sicily by Agathocles, who began cultivating it in Syracuse in 310 B.C.»

Fertile Soils and Gently Rolling Hills
Tenuta Sallier de La Tour stands out for its fertile soils, predominantly clay-rich, with traces of limestone, sand and silt. The landscape is gently rolling, with expansive flat areas where deep, fresh soils blend seamlessly with alluvial materials. This perfect balance is further enhanced by the presence of numerous natural springs, and the estate features 2.77 hectares of lakes and streams. These natural water sources ensure consistent irrigation for the vines, contributing to the ideal growing conditions for the estate’s vineyards.

The Ideal Habitat for Syrah at Sallier de La Tour Estate
In this unique environment, Syrah has found its ideal habitat. The warm, humid microclimate, combined with the fresh soils, ensures a steady and consistent ripening of the grapes.
The estate features three distinct Syrah vineyards, each with its own unique soil composition. These vineyards are the result of a decade of agronomic and enological research, aimed at fully enhancing the variety’s potential. The outcome is a collection of wines with well-defined identities.

«Syrah has the remarkable ability to produce fragrant, long-lived red wines that grow richer in aromatic complexity as they age»

La Monaca Vineyard: Home to Powerful Red Wines
Nestled at an altitude of 320 meters, the La Monaca vineyard spans 2 hectares, planted in 2011. The soil, with a predominantly sandy texture (37.4% sand and 12.5% clay), is well-aerated and highly draining, resulting in a naturally dry environment that limits vine vigor. With its northeast-facing exposure, the vineyard enjoys ample sunlight but is protected from the intense summer heat. This microclimate helps the vines endure hotter, drier years, ensuring a consistent maturation of the grapes.
With 4600 plants per hectare, the vineyard’s low yield, combined with the unique soil and climate conditions, creates an ideal environment for producing grapes that yield powerful red wines, perfectly suited for aging.

«Built in 1909 in elegant Liberty style, the “La Monaca” cellar stands as one of the crown jewels of the estate»

Tenuta Grande Vineyard: A Terroir for Rosés and Young Wines
The Tenuta Grande vineyard, with its west-facing exposure and a planting density of 4166 vines per hectare, is defined by its silty soil composition (26.8% sand and 22.5% clay). This unique soil retains moisture effectively, promoting greater vine vigor. Combined with a microclimate that balances coolness and brightness during the summer, the terroir creates ideal conditions for producing grapes that embody freshness and lightness. These elements come together to craft lively young wines and rosés, showcasing vibrant character.

«The Ex-Pereto Vineyard showcases how expertly managed land can produce wines that adapt to a variety of styles, reflecting the richness of the territory»

Ex-Pereto Vineyard: Highlighting Versatility
The Ex-Pereto Vineyard stands out for its predominantly clay-based soil (14.4% sand and 33.5% clay), which retains moisture in the spring and dries out during the summer, providing medium vigor to the vines. With its southwest exposure, the vineyard enjoys abundant sunlight and warm summer temperatures, ensuring optimal grape ripening.
The medium vigor of the vines allows for diverse wine styles, adapting to the climatic nuances of each vintage. From Ex-Pereto’s unique terroir emerge full-bodied and structured red wines, as well as fresh, easy-drinking options and lively rosés, all demonstrating the richness and adaptability of this vineyard.

«Tasca d’Almerita stands as a leading example of sustainability on the international wine scene»
