Planeta Winery – La Baronia Estate, Capo Milazzo (Messina)

La Baronia is Planeta’s smallest estate, spanning 8 hectares of vineyards where the ancient Mamertino wine is crafted along with research on relic grapes.

Must Try

At Capo Milazzo’s La Baronia Estate, in partnership with the Barone Lucifero Foundation, owner of these historically rich lands that were in a state of near abandonment until 2011, Planeta has undertaken a vital project to restore agricultural heritage and biodiversity. Where once there was only overgrowth, new vineyards now flourish, framed by picturesque nature trails. This initiative stands as a symbol of Planeta’s vision of sustainable viticulture – encompassing not only cultivation and production but also environmental, cultural, social and economic commitment.

Respect for the Land
On the small Capo Milazzo peninsula, the flat promontory, bordered by steep cliffs descending to the sea, has soil of alluvial origin – loose, dark and deep, with a fine silt-rich texture. Situated 30 meters above sea level, this area benefits from a 14-15°C temperature variation. Viticultural methods here are carefully chosen to respect the natural balance of the land, using marine-area techniques like “alberello appoggiato”, all cultivated without irrigation.

Reviving the Ancient Mamertino and More
Planeta’s Capo Milazzo project was born from a passion for reviving and honoring Mamertino, a wine with ancient roots. Originally crafted by the Mamertini people in Mylae (Milazzo), Mamertino was celebrated by Pliny and famously enjoyed by Julius Caesar.
At La Baronia, 4 hectares of vineyard are dedicated to the Mamertino Doc requirements, featuring a blend of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Nocera. Nocera, one of Sicily’s oldest grape varieties and typical of the Messina province, brings unique elegance and structure to the wine, offering a flavor profile deeply tied to the region.
Additionally, Planeta is experimenting with three heritage grape varieties – Vitrarolo, Lucignola and Catanese Nera – preserving the diversity of Sicily’s viticultural heritage.

Innovative Sustainability
Planeta’s unique “removable” winery, located just steps from the sea and surrounded by the stunning vineyards on the Capo Milazzo promontory, stands as a symbol of the estate’s commitment to total sustainability. Architecturally advanced, this small winery was designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, with minimal environmental impact. Built with a lightweight iron and stone frame, the structure is temporary, fully dismountable and can be removed without leaving a trace on the landscape – showcasing Planeta’s dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the area.
