Palazzolo Acreide stands on the site of the Greek Akrai, founded in 664 B.C. by the Syracusans and destroyed by the Arabs. Rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, the town is now renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture. Highlights include the churches of Annunziata, San Sebastiano and Santi Pietro e Paolo, as well as the Judica Palace and the Town Hall.
Ancient Akrai‘s remnants include the Teatro Greco (Greek Theater) built in the III century B.C., the Bouleuterion, the Tempio di Afrodite (Temple of Aphrodite), the Feralia Temples, the Intagliata and Intagliatella quarries, and the carved reliefs of the Twelve Saints (Dodici Santoni).
