Perched at 665 meters in the Hyblaean Mountains, Chiaramonte Gulfi is an agricultural town named after its founder, Manfredi I Chiaramonte, the 14th-century Count of Modica, and the nearby village of Gulfi, destroyed by the Angevins in 1299.
Must-see sites include the castle with its grand gate, the Chiesa di San Filippo (Church of St. Philip), the Chiesa di Santa Maria Nova, the Chiesa del Salvatore (Church of the Savior) and the Arco dell’Annunziata (Annunziata Arch), a remnant of the city walls. The town is also known for its fine lace, embroidery, and woodcraft.
