Agira, the birthplace of the historian Diodorus Siculus (90-20 BC), was once a Greek colony and later a Roman settlement. In the 5th-6th century AD, Saint Philip of Agira founded a monastery here, which reached its peak during the Norman era, and designed the Mother Church.
The town is also home to two towering remnants of the ancient Swabian castle, which still dominate the landscape.
