The Alcamo Doc Wine Route offers a spectacular journey through Sicily’s western heartland. From vineyard-covered hills to turquoise bays and ancient Greek temples, this route is a sensory adventure for winelovers, culture seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Set between Trapani and Palermo, the Alcamo Doc Wine Route traces a scenic path through a captivating landscape that opens onto the Gulf of Castellammare. The route runs through the municipality of Alcamo and parts of Castellammare del Golfo and Calatafimi, reaching out toward Gibellina, Camporeale, Balestrate, Partinico, San Cipirello, San Giuseppe Jato and Monreale.
Geometric Vineyards and Historic Bagli
The area is a patchwork of vineyard-covered hills, where the land shifts in color from clay browns to reddish sands and bright white limestone. Dotting this countryside are “bagli” —ancient fortified farmsteads built for agricultural and defensive purposes. Characterized by a single entrance, narrow slits in the walls, a large central courtyard, surrounding stables, storehouses and farmworkers’ quarters, these architectural gems tell the story of rural Sicily.
Nature and Coastal Wonders
The Alcamo Doc Wine Route opens the door to some of western Sicily’s most breathtaking natural and cultural gems. Among its highlights are the Zingaro Nature Reserve, with its unspoiled coastline and crystal-clear waters stretching between Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito Lo Capo; the picturesque village of Scopello, nestled around an 18th-century baglio; the iconic Tonnara di Scopello (now a boutique hotel and restaurant, and a filming location for the hit Tv series Màkari); and the stunning Guidaloca Bay, where Caribbean-blue waters meet a 16th-century cylindrical watchtower rising above the shoreline.
Ancient Temples and Timeless Castles
This wine route also takes travelers through some of western Sicily’s most captivating historic landmarks, from the archaeological park of Segesta, where a remarkably preserved Greek temple and an ancient amphitheater still set the stage for live performances, to the dramatic castles that dot the landscape, including the Castle of the Counts of Modica in Alcamo and the Arab-Norman Castle in Castellammare del Golfo.
A Journey of Wine, Taste and Tradition
The Alcamo Doc Wine Route offers travelers an immersive experience of Sicily’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Its wine production – ranging from white, rosé and red wines to novelli, riserva labels and sparkling wines – provides a unique tasting journey. Paired with the area’s traditional gastronomy, each glass becomes a celebration of Sicily’s sun, soil and soul.
