Once known as Aluntium, a Greek colony dating back to the IV century BC, San Marco d’Alunzio took shape around a castle built by Robert Guiscard in 1061. The village boasts remarkable monuments, including the Hellenistic-era Tempio di Ercole (Temple of Hercules), later transformed into the Chiesa di San Marco (Church of San Marco) during the Middle Ages, and several other historic churches such as Sant’Antonio, Santa Maria dell’Aiuto, San Teodoro, Aracoeli and the Badia Grande.
